Durand Bernarr Moves and Grooves On Stage At Afropunk Brooklyn
"We gon have to start this over yall," Durand Bernarr told the crowd gathered around The Big Top Stage at the 2023 Afropunk Brooklyn Music Festival. He had just graced the stage and started the intro to his set before having some technical difficulties. The slight hiccup didn't damper the crowd's enthusiasm, though. Instead, it gave all of us time to really take in Bernarr's look.
Everybody’s favorite cousin on their daddy’s side wore a festival favorite up top, a chain body harness that draped around his core, just hanging past his waistline. Perfect for the hot weather that blessed us on Saturday afternoon --it rained earlier that morning. Below the waist, Durand donned flared leather pants with a flamed design on the front and buttons --unfastened-- going up the side of the pants legs, stopping at and exposing his thighs and the yellow platform boots on his feet. And to top it off, a heavy bejeweled Erykah Badu/ Beyoncé Renaissance Wide Brim hat that he took off a couple of songs into his set.
Bernarr performed several fan favorites including, "Summons," "Lil Bit (remix)," and "Company." "No, you're not used to having company over, So let me sing a little lullaby, When I get in, I'ma help you ease your mind," he and the crowd sang song after song. And if you didn't know, Durand Bernarr can SANG, and he didn't hesitate to showcase his vocal ability on stage as he grooved, sashayed, pranced, and Mississippi Cha Cha Slid across the stage. It was a fun time! A family reunion, if you will, full of supporters who sang, danced and fellowshiped along with him.
