Review: Christian Siriano Fall 2018 Collection
I remember attending my first Christian Siriano show. It was his Fall 2013 collection (my second season covering shows), and like most, I too watched his Project Runway season (with my mother), and we were fans; so it became a big ordeal to the entire family that I was attending! The stan in me was ecstatic to see the designer in person (even from my standing seat).
En Route to his ten-year anniversary runway presentation not much has changed with the excitement --attending his show it's a highlight in my schedule-- or with the fanning out, but my 2018 reasons for anticipating Siriano’s presentation are entirely different.
In an industry where we’re calling for designers --and the fashion industry at large-- to remember all, I know I’m getting a healthy dose of diversity at Christian Siriano. Black, brown, white, short, curves, thin, natural hair, straight hair, models by the layers in all different flavors stormed the Grand Lodge’s red carpet. Full-length red, maroon, and pink faux furs with matching thigh-high boots opened the runway show, possibly made with grammy nominate Cardi B in mind who sat in the front row wearing a 2-piece green suit from the brand. Men walked out in iridescent short suits with faux fur-patched trainers —Whoopi Goldberg also front and center had a pair of the kicks on in hot pink. There were even great options for showgoer Lavern Coxs, like the sleeveless black mid-length dress with a thigh-high slit and textured neckline.
During a week where seeing collections can be repetitive Siriano delivers drama. A quick changeup in music and here come your Oscar options! Paying homage to himself, Siriano recreated many of his signature looks, wrapped flowing sleeves on billowy dresses, pleated ruffled organza skirts, dresses with long ruffled embellished sleeves, and ball gowns. The crowd gave a standing ovation as the designer took his bow!
It wasn’t his most substantial showing, the blue floral and metallic numbers didn't wow like other sections of this fall collection, but when you’re celebrating ten years in the business, you listen to your hooded Kermit, say "phuck those edits," and send every damn look down the runway.
